Mid-century modern bedroom before and after: a bare room made warm

HomeDesignly editorial team

A bare builder-grade bedroom with white walls, a black metal bed frame and grey carpet, redesigned with the bedroom design tool and this mid-century idea as the style reference. The window, its blinds, the carpet and the ceiling light stayed; walnut furniture and warm textiles came in.

Try this on your room

The starting room

The room in the starting photo has nothing wrong with its shape and light, but nothing in it gives it character: a metal bed frame with no headboard, a plain grey comforter, bare walls and an empty floor make it feel unfinished.

What changed

  • A walnut bed with a wide headboard replaced the metal frame
  • White bedding with a mustard throw and cushions
  • Walnut nightstands on tapered legs with brass mushroom lamps
  • A walnut dresser along the right wall
  • Floor-length curtains on a rod above the window
  • A large jute rug, an abstract print above the bed and potted olive trees

What stayed the same

  • Walls, ceiling and the shape of the room
  • The window and its white blinds
  • The ceiling light
  • The grey carpet, now partly under a rug
  • The camera angle and where the bed stands

Materials and finishes

  • Walnut
  • Brass
  • Cotton bedding
  • Mustard knit throw
  • Jute rug

Who it suits

Plain bedrooms in newer homes, where the walls, window and carpet are fine and the room only lacks furniture with some character. Walnut and mustard warm up a room with cool daylight; in a small room, the dresser may be the piece to leave out.

Limitations

  • Furniture sizes and positions are visual approximations, not measurements.
  • Colors on screen differ from real paint and materials. Check them with physical samples.
  • Results depend on the photo: its light, its angle and what is in the room.
  • The tool kept the old ceiling light; a different fixture is a separate job.
  • The dresser and the plants are added pieces. Check your floor space before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the small image in the corner?

It is the idea this case used as its style reference. The tool takes the colors, materials and furniture style from it and keeps the room from the starting photo.

Is this a real home?

No. The starting photo is a sample room we generated to test the tool, as the note under the image says. The result is what the tool made from it, without retouching.
