Coastal living room before and after: a dark brown room made bright

HomeDesignly editorial team

A living room with chocolate-brown walls, maroon curtains and two brown microfiber sofas, redesigned with the living room design tool and this coastal idea as the style reference. Both sofas kept their places and sizes, and the dark wood floor and the window stayed.

Try this on your room

The starting room

The room in the starting photo is dim even with a large window. The brown walls soak up the light, the maroon curtains frame the window in another dark color, and the sofas, coffee table and patterned rug leave almost nothing pale in the room.

What changed

  • Walls painted a warm off-white
  • Both sofas shown with cream slipcovers, in the same places
  • A whitewashed wood coffee table replaced the dark one
  • A chunky jute rug replaced the patterned one
  • Sheer linen curtains replaced the maroon ones
  • A landscape painting above the sofa, plants and a ceramic table lamp

What stayed the same

  • The shape of the room, the ceiling and the window
  • The dark wood floor
  • Where both sofas stand, and their sizes
  • The camera angle

Colors in the result

  • #B4A38A
  • #B49F8E
  • #B4977C
  • #825F3E
  • #593E2C

Sampled from the result image. Screens show color differently.

Materials and finishes

  • Slipcovered sofas
  • Whitewashed wood
  • Chunky jute rug
  • Sheer linen curtains
  • Ceramic lamp base

Who it suits

Living rooms with good daylight but dark walls and furniture. Light walls and pale textiles let the window light the whole room, and a dark wood floor can stay, as it does here.

Limitations

  • Furniture sizes and positions are visual approximations, not measurements.
  • Colors on screen differ from real paint and materials. Check them with physical samples.
  • Results depend on the photo: its light, its angle and what is in the room.
  • The style reference has blue and green accents; this result kept to sand and cream with a little green. Blue cushions or a blue throw would bring it closer.
  • The sofas are shown slipcovered at their old size. Slipcovers have to fit the sofa you have.

Frequently asked questions

What is the small image in the corner?

It is the idea this case used as its style reference. The tool takes the colors, materials and furniture style from it and keeps the room from the starting photo.

Is this a real home?

No. The starting photo is a sample room we generated to test the tool, as the note under the image says. The result is what the tool made from it, without retouching.
